 ~ The burritos were steaming out of the kitchen, rounds of Corona buckets and margaritas were being shuttled from the bar to thirsty imbibers and a giant red pepper was decorating the doorway. The scene could have been in any bar in New York's Upper West Side or San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter or Seattle's Belltown.

This bar, however, is in the middle of Sanlitun, in one of the busiest, trendiest nightlife areas in Beijing. The waiters speak little, if any, English — they understand the essential words, which are margarita, Corona and tequila.

Sanlitun Bar Street is lined with tacky bars on the main road.

But like most places in Beijing, the good stuff is tucked away in nearby alleyways.

Jim Boyce writes a blog dedicated to the drinking scene in Beijing.

Number one on his list for an ice cold beer is the Mexican eatery Saddle Cantina, equipped with a special ice tap that serves beer at -2C.

"The two things you want to order are Stella and Hoegaarden draught because you cannot believe how long it stays cold," Mr Boyce said.

They also have good chicken enchiladas.

 From the same people behind the Rickshaw, and offering the same burrito, the Saddle has been a big hit in the new Nali Studios, including winning Beijing's best new bar. These guys really know what they're doing because the Saddle deserves all the praise it has received.
